![]() WATER VALLEY-The funeral service for Tony Cornelious (Jabo) Gooch was held Wednesday, March 16, 2011, at one o’clock in the afternoon, in the Water Valley City Auditorium, with Brother Goodwin officiating. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, Coffeeville, or the charity of one’s choice. Arrangements were under the direction of Garner-Harper Funeral Home. Burial followed in the Coffeeville Cemetery. Services were held Sunday, March 20, in First Baptist Church, Coffeeville, with Rev. three grandchildren, Tamara Lewis and her husband, Todd, of Sanford, N.C., Chandra Page of Carrboro, N.C., and Adria Zuccaro and her husband, Tom, of Panama City, Fla. He is survived by his son, Tim Denley, and his wife, Linda, of Fairfax, Virginia a daughter, Terry Page and her husband, Fred, of Apex, N.C. He was preceded in death by his wife, Irene Terry Denley, in 1979, and his second wife, Mary Ellen Brower Hyde Basden Denley, in 2008 sisters, Bessie Speir, Essie Boyle, Jessie Denley, Ethel Pate, Grace Hughes, Nell Pittman, and Clara Chamberlain, and brothers, Chester Denley, Sellers Denley, and Gerald Denley, and several beloved nieces and nephews. He was also owner/operator of a cattle/tree farm in Yalobusha County. In addition to being the administrator of the school in Coffeeville, he was a member of numerous civic organizations and was dedicated in his service to the Coffeeville First Baptist Church where he taught Sunday School and was a deacon for many years. He was selected to the Order of the Red Rose, an honorary school administrator’s organization, and Phi Delta Kappa, a professional fraternity in education. He also served on the board of directors for the Mississippi Education Association in 1973-1974, and served in numerous positions with the MEA. He began teaching in the Coffeeville Schools in 1948 and became superintendent in 1952 and remained in this post until his retirement in 1980.ĭuring his career in school administration, he served on numerous statewide committees and was on the executive committee for the Mississippi High School Activities Association for 10 years. He remained at Jeff Davis until he joined the Army in 1945 and served with the occupation forces in Japan. He accepted a teaching position at Jeff Davis School in Yalobusha County in 1940 and became superintendent in 1942. He began his career as an educator at Savannah in 1937, and in 1938-40, he taught and coached at New Augusta. His life was largely devoted to the betterment of the community through his tireless efforts to assure that as an educator all children under his guidance received a quality education. He received his Master’s in Education from the University of Mississippi in 1957. ![]() He received his undergraduate degree from Mississippi College in 1937, where he majored in commercial work and lettered in track. He graduated from Coffeeville High School in 1933. His education began in a one-room school at Elam, where his sister was the teacher. He was born, and grew up, on his parents’ farm east of Coffeeville.
